October 16, 2007

Last night, the Baltimore County Council was asked to consider enforcing some of the strictest guidelines for pit bulls and their owners. The restrictions—which required pit bull owners to keep their dogs in concrete-based kennels and post warning signs on their lawns—were ultimately denied by the council.

While the measures were considered to address ways to prevent Maryland dog bite attacks, many animal rights activists said that these rules were unfair. They said the problem is dangerous animals, not a specific breed of dog. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does state, however, that pit bulls were responsible for more dog bite-related attacks than any other breed.

Girl injured in Maryland dog bite attack, police response criticized

dog bite No Comments

The family of a 7-year-old dog bite victim expressed outrage at the length of time it took paramedics to arrive at the scene when the girl was attacked by a pit bull, reports the Baltimore Sun.

The little girl, Kayla, was playing outside Friday afternoon when the pit bull locked its jaws around her left leg. The dog couldn’t be pried from the girl by family members and bystanders, and only let go when police arrived and began shooting the dog. Police seized two other pit bulls from the home of the dog owners.

The Maryland dog bite victim then had to wait at least twenty minutes for paramedics to arrive, despite the nine police cars already at the scene. Family members expressed worry that she could have bled to death from her dog bite injuries while the ambulance made its way to the scene.

The Fire Department’s average response time is around three and a half minutes, and officials said the delay was likely due to a dispatch problem.

In today’s issue of the Baltimore Sun, an article highlights the need for the city to increase the number of its animal control officers. The shortage of officers has resulted in a lack to control animal breeding and prevent fights and Maryland dog bites. The article continues to tell the story of a lady who was attacked by two pit bulls on June 25. Ruby Pulley was walking in her neighborhood when the dogs attacked her so badly that she required surgery. The owner of the dogs, 17-year-old Dominique Palmer, who breeds and sells pit bulls to other families in the neighborhood, said Pulley must have provoked his dogs. An animal control officer shot one of the dogs that attacked Pulley and took the other dog, as well as two other adult pit bulls and three puppies from Palmer’s house, to the city’s animal shelter.
